Rising Oil Prices: Simple Ways to Reduce your Heating Bills.

Oil prices have been making headlines lately and if you've opened a recent fuel delivery invoice and felt your stomach drop, you're not alone. If you live in a rural village across Kent and Sussex, chances are you rely on oil to heat your home. From Goudhurst and Lamberhurst to Burwash and Etchingham - many homes are off the mains gas grid and rely on oil-fired heating.

At Wells Spa we've seen how much a poorly maintained or inefficient heating system adds to bills that are already under pressure. Here are a few things worth checking:

1. Plan Your Oil Buying Carefully

For villages like Brenchley, Kilndown, Flimwell and Matfield where mains gas simply isn't an option, oil buying strategy matters. Prices are typically lower in spring and early summer when demand falls. Buying in bulk or joining a village oil-buying syndicate, which several communities have set up, can reduce your cost per litre significantly. Don't wait until your tank is nearly empty in November; that's when prices and wait times are at their worst.

2. Use Lower, Steadier Temperatures

Running your heating at a lower temperature for longer is generally more efficient than turning it up high for short bursts. The recommended indoor temperature for comfort and efficiency is between 18°C and 21°C. Every degree you reduce your thermostat setting can cut around 10% from your heating bill. A programmable timer that gradually warms the house before you wake up, rather than firing up to full heat all at once, also reduces the strain on your boiler.

Worth knowing: If you have a large oil tank, it’s a good idea to have it checked regularly for leaks.

3. Get Your Oil Boiler Serviced Every Year

This is a really important step and one that’s often skipped. An oil boiler that hasn't been serviced could be burning more fuel than it needs to, simply to produce the same amount of heat. Older farmhouses and period cottages often have boilers that haven't seen an engineer in years. A properly serviced boiler can run significantly more efficiently, and regular maintenance means small faults are caught before they become costly breakdowns in the winter, when demand is higher.

Quick tip: If you have an older boiler, it could be running well below its potential efficiency, meaning a significant portion of what you spend on heating could be going to waste. Modern condensing oil boilers are far more efficient by comparison, and upgrading could lead to meaningful savings on your annual fuel costs. It's worth getting a quote to see what the numbers look like for your home.

4. Install a Smart Thermostat

Many rural homes still have basic dial thermostats that offer little control or precision. A smart thermostat lets you manage your heating from your phone, programme different temperatures for different times of day, and avoid heating an empty house. Some models can reduce heating bills by up to 30%. We fit smart thermostats regularly for our customers and can advise which is most compatible with your existing system.

5. Bleed Your Radiators Before Winter

Trapped air in radiators is one of the most common and most overlooked causes of an inefficient heating system. If you notice cold patches at the top of a radiator, that's air stopping the hot water from circulating properly. Bleeding each radiator takes five minutes and a radiator key. Done before the cold season, it can make a real difference to how evenly and quickly your home heats up.
